Mentor Application
Mentor/Mentee Match Protocols:
1. Both
Mentors and Mentees must be current AFPNCOH members, and Mentees must
be in an active development role. Scholarships are available four times
per year through a competitive application process.
2. Participation
as a Mentee is available to members
and it is recommended that you have
completed at least one year as a development professional.
Participation as a Mentor is available to members with at least five
years experience in fundraising.
3. Matches
will be made at the beginning of each year and run through December.
4. Mentees
should desire additional coaching in fundraising.
5. The
Mentor is responsible for making the initial contact with the Mentee. A
face-to-face visit is recommended to determine at the outset of the
relationship in which specific areas of fundraising the Mentee needs
guidance. The Mentor is encouraged to introduce the Mentee to the
resources available in the community and encourage the attendance at AFPNCOH workshops and activities.
6.
The time involvement should be a minimum of
at least quarterly face-to-face meetings plus four phone calls per
year. Additional meetings, phone calls and emails are encouraged as
needed.
7.
The proximity of Mentor/Mentee will be
taken into consideration when matches are made so that every effort can
be made to meet face-to-face.
Mentor/Mentee Match Guidelines:
1. The
Mentoring Program fosters AFP ethics and incorporates AFP programs and
services.
2. AFP
Mentors should guide Mentees by incorporating AFP Ethical Principals and
Standards in guidance.
3. The
relationship is meant to be career specific and is not to be used or
construed in any way as a consulting relationship. Mentors are
encouraged to recommend appropriate resources i.e. courses, workshops,
educational opportunities, vendors or consultants. The mentoring
program is not a job placement service.
4. Mentors
and Mentees should advise their employers that they intend to
participate in the program. Mentors and Mentees must respect that the
information they share about their organizations is confidential in
nature.
5. The
Mentee and Mentor will create objectives to fulfill during the one year
relationship in a written goal statement.
6. The
co-chairs of the Mentoring Sub-committee will be available to the
matches. The co-chairs will make calls or meet separately with both the Mentee and
Mentor 6 months into the program to ensure that the relationship is
still ongoing. If the match is not working, the co-chairs will determine
if a new match will be made. The match will be a minimum of one year.
7. The
Mentors and Mentees will meet as a group at least once a year on an
occasion specifically designed for the Mentoring Program. This does not
count as a face-to-face meeting.
8. Mentors
will be apprised of their potential Mentee before the match is finalized
and, unless they have concerns or objections, the match will be
confirmed.
