Every year, the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy awards one Chamberlain Scholarship to each AFP chapter for an individual to attend the International Conference. The scholarship is named for Ralph Chamberlain, who was instrumental in starting the organization we now know as the Association of Fundraising Professionals

The Chamberlain Scholarship is designed to help individuals serving nonprofit organizations develop their knowledge and skill in fundraising.

The 2013 Conference will be held in San Diego on April 7-9, 2013. The Chamberlain Scholarship from the Foundation covers the conference registration fee for the recipient (minus a nominal $10 scholar registration fee). The AFP North Central Ohio Chapter provides an additional $1,000 to help defray the expenses of travel and accommodations.

This scholarship is only awarded to a current member of AFP who has never previously attended a National Conference.

If you are interested in applying, the application for the 2012 Chamberlain Scholarship is available here. The deadline is October 1, 2011.

For more information, please contact Tammy Seikel, The Wilderness Center, at 330-359-5235 or tammy@wildernesscenter.org.

2012 Chamberlain Scholarship Winner

Sandy Turner, the 2012 Chamberlain Scholar, attended the AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Vancouver in April.

Currently the Vice President of Development for the Akron Area YMCA, Sandy oversees the Annual Fund, Partners With Youth, that is managed by each of the 10 YMCA branch executive directors. Sandy recently managed the University Park Y Capital Campaign, working with a volunteer steering committee to raise 10.3 million dollars to build the new YMCA that replaced the aging Canal Square Y in downtown Akron. Additionally, Sandy orchestrates the independent YMCA Endowment Foundation, working with a small volunteer Board to raise awareness of the Foundation, which helps support the Akron Area YMCA branches in providing new programs through grants.

Sandy is involved in the Junior League of Stark County, AFP North Central Ohio Chapter, Y USA Partner YMCA mentor, and fundraising for her boy’s sports and musical activities in High School. She is a Master Trainer for AFP and Faculty Trainer for the YMCA.

2011 Chamberlain Scholarship Winner

Our 2011 Chamberlain Scholar was Tracy Figurella, Director of The Aultman Foundation.  Tracy attended the AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Chicago, Il, on March 20-23.

Tracy brings to her position as director of The Aultman Foundation more than 18 years experience in the health care field. Since coming to Aultman in 1999, Tracy has worked in corporate communications, and was formerly director of volunteer services. In addition to serving on the Women’s Board of Aultman Hospital, Tracy serves on the Kent State Alumni Board, Stark County Chapter, as well as the YWCA. Tracy recently worked with The Women’s Board of Aultman Hospital on the completion of a $5.9 campaign to complete Stark County’s first inpatient hospice, The Women’s Board Compassionate Care Center, to open this fall. In addition, Tracy is working with Aultman College of Nursing and Health Sciences to secure funding for onsite science labs. Tracy serves on the AFP Membership committee.

2010 Chamberlain Scholarship Winner

Our 2010 Chamberlain Scholar was Susan Van Vorst, Vice President for Fund Development at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron.  Susan attended the AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore, MD from April 11-14, 2010.

For 13 years Susan has served as the chief development officer at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, former estate of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company co-founder F.A. Seiberling and his wife Gertrude.  Stan Hywet is the largest cultural nonprofit in Summit County and is one of our country’s National Historic Landmarks.  During Susan’s tenure the estate’s board and leadership raised and invested over $15 million in capital improvements and major restoration efforts for this jewel of northeast Ohio.  Every one of landscape architect Warren Manning’s signature gardens has been fully restored within the last decade, with the Japanese Garden reopening to the public in June, 2010.  Susan has also been responsible for musical programming at Stan Hywet Hall since 2000.

In June, 2010, Susan will embark upon a new opportunity for career growth as Director of Leadership Giving for The Cleveland Orchestra.  Music is Susan’s lifelong passion and her background as well.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in piano from Kent State University and a master’s degree in arts administration from The University of Akron—always with a special interest in orchestra management.

A graduate of Leadership Akron Class XVII, Susan has served on the boards of Project: LEARN of Summit County, Tuesday Musical Association, and the Western Reserve Planned Giving Council.  She served previously on the AFPNCO chapter Membership Committee.  Susan and her family will continue to reside in Akron where she enjoys cycling, swimming and hiking among her favorite pastimes.
