MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Mella Castner - castnerm@summahealth.org
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am so pleased that this year's Career
Success Institute is able to feature
Penelope Burk, President of Cygnus
Applied Research, Inc., and author of
Donor-Centered Fundraising. Penelope
energizes and captivates her audience with
her presentation on donor-centered
fundraising. As a development professional,
you can take away items to implement
immediately to focus on improving
communication with your donors. Most
importantly, you leave with a plan to
dramatically improve your average gift
value. Be sure to invite your directors and
board members so that they can share your
enthusiasm and help in implementing her
donor-centered principals. Shelley Koch, Director of Development for Victim
Assistance Program, attended an AFP International conference
where Penelope was both the keynote and a breakout session
speaker: "Penelope was the highlight of the conference. Her
presentations were inspiring, engaging and extremely
entertaining. You won't want the session to end!" The CSI breakout sessions planned before Penelope's
presentation are also sure to inspire you. Take a look at
the
article below and then click on the link to register.
I am deeply honored to serve as president for AFP of
North Central Ohio Chapter in 2012. President-elect Pamela
Webb and I have the privilege of working with an immensely
talented board, following a course charted by Dr. Suzanne
Allen and the other chapter leaders who preceded her.
Together, we are committed to making the AFP member
experience more valuable and more relevant than ever. Each
of our board committees is planning a terrific year for
growth and professional development in 2012: diversity,
membership, mentoring, professional development, National
Philanthropy Day and more. Please be sure to take advantage
of these programs. In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like
to discover ways you can benefit more from your membership,
feel free to contact me or any of our committee
chairs. I am looking forward to working with you this year
and hope to see you at CSI 2012!

January 31, 2012 - 11:30 am - 1:00 pm Please join us for a Member Orientation Luncheon on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. This is a great opportunity for new members, people who are thinking of joining, and even long-time members to learn the local and national benefits of actively participating in AFP. Topics will include programs planned for the year, ethics, current opportunities, and any questions you may have about AFP membership. This event will be helpful to new members, people who are thinking of joining, or long-time members wanting to get more from their membership. Although there is no cost to attend the luncheon, we do ask that you RSVP at http://www.afpncoh.org/actionorientation.htm by January 24, 2012, so that we can order enough food. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Mastriano at 330-253-4071 or lisapregnancycare@sbcglobal.net.

Donor-Centered Fundraising is the breakthrough concept in fundraising and communication that halts donor attrition while setting a new standard for fundraising success. Based on over 7 years of research with hundreds of charities and donors from across North America, the findings have produced critically important information for charities and fundraisers about why donors stop giving or give less than they could and how retention and average gift value can be dramatically improved. Other break-out sessions include:
1A: How to REALLY Write a Grant!
1B: Ethics in Fundraising
1C: Meet the Millenials
2A:
Managing Upward!
2B: Branding Your Nonprofit
2C: Moves Management™

The North Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals is asking for your support and involvement in our exciting mentoring program! This structured mentoring program assists the careers of new and transitioning fundraising professionals. There is no charge for the program, but both mentors and mentees must be current members of AFP. Participation as a Mentee is available to members who have completed at least one year as a development professional. Participation as a Mentor is available to members with at least five years experience in fundraising. Mentors and mentees commit to a one year relationship, but may extend it informally if desired by both parties. Please visit http://www.afpncoh.org/mentoring.htm for more information about the Mentoring Program and to fill out an application. The next round of mentoring will kick off in March; Mentee applications are due by February 17, 2012. If you have any questions, please contact Laura at lshank@summithumane.org or (330) 487-0333. We look forward to your participation in this important project. Laura Jo Hawk - laurajo.hawk@cantonmercy.org Discussions on Diversity A recent report from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation shows that diversity is changing the face of philanthropy, reflecting a growing U.S. population shift of ethnic and racial groups. The new report, “Cultures of Giving: Energizing and Expanding Philanthropy by and for Communities of Color” shows a “growing movement to spark philanthropic giving” from the very sectors AFP International defines as diverse including race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. This is good news for fundraisers as different sectors within our communities take on a more prominent role within the philanthropic sector. The study’s core tenants are:
As fundraisers, our take-away should be leveraging our ability to inspire every giver – regardless of their background – to embrace philanthropy as an agent of social change. And, as a profession, to celebrate our own personal differences and those of our colleagues as we work toward collaboration, inclusion and forging stronger relationships with our donors and funders.
