Welcome New 2009 Board Member
On behalf of the Nominating Committee, please welcome
the AFP North Central Ohio Chapter’s recent addition to the Board of
Directors, Shelly Durbin, who joined the Board to fill an unexpired term
of Laura Tinney:
Shelly Durbin, Director of Development and Public
Relations, International Institute of Akronm is honored to serve
as a new Board Member with the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
She has been a member of the AFP Membership Committee and the National
Philanthropy Day Committee for two years. Shelly holds a Master’s Degree
and B.A. Degree in Communication from The University of Akron. She has
fifteen years experience in fundraising and has worked with various
non-profit agencies in the areas of development and public relations.
She has two sons, John and Joshua, and resides in Jackson Township.
2010 Board Nominations
In addition, the AFP North Central Ohio Chapter is
honored to present the following nominations to the 2010 Board of
Directors. Due to recent changes in the bylaws, Directors serve one-year
terms.
Barb Greene is the owner of and principal
consultant with CommonGood Consulting, Inc., an organization that
provides consulting, technical assistance, and fund development services
for nonprofit and public organizations. Barb has spent her professional
career in the nonprofit sector with organizations that included two
public television stations, the YWCA of Flint, MI, a management support
organization for nonprofits in West Michigan, and Summit Education
Initiative in Akron. She is also an entrepreneur, having started two
nonprofits along with her current business. Barb is active in the
community and serves on the boards of Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Association, Akron Urban League, and Akron Women’s Endowment Fund. When
she’s not working or with her family, there’s a good bet that she’s on
the tennis court!
Shelley Koch, Director of Development, Victim
Assistance Program, has been active in the fundraising sector
both as a volunteer and a professional since 1984. She joined the Victim
Assistance Program as Director of Development in 2007 and was
responsible for the implementation of the newly created development
department. During the past 2 years, Shelley has acquired donor
software, developed donor tracking, stewardship policy, and procedures,
created annual giving and leadership campaigns, and successfully
implemented fundraising events. While living in San Antonio from
2004-2007, Shelley served as Sponsor and Vendor Chair for the San
Antonio AFP Conference. She is happy to be back in Akron with her
husband David, and looks forward to her term as an AFP NCOH Board
Member.
Belinda Richardson, Director of Development, Akron
Urban League, has spent most of her professional career between
the nonprofit sector and academia. Committed to empowering adults and
families, her vitae depicts years of teaching and training adult
learners, facilitating workshops, grant writing, fundraising, and
program and curriculum development. Belinda’s passion and commitment is
to work that is designed to strengthen the family and community.
Specifically, work that cultivates positive relationships between
individuals, families, and communities, and the environment in which
they live. Her life’s work is to build bridges of understanding between
cultures that lead to harmony and to encourage continued research and
development of strategies designed to build cohesion among families and
the professionals that serve them.
Laura K. Shank, Fund Development and Marketing
Director, Greenleaf Family Center, is excited to join the AFP NCOH
Board of Directors and the opportunity to grow as a development
professional. She joined Greenleaf Family Center in 2007 and has taken
Marketing and Fund Development of the agency to a new level. She has
expanded funding sources and levels, implemented several additional
fundraising events, and increased community awareness of the agency as
well as its programming. Laura has a B.S.B.A. with a Specialization in
Marketing from Bowling Green State University. Laura currently serves
the Chapter on the National Philanthropy Day Logistics Committee.

About Our Speaker
Dianne is an independent consultant with nonprofit
organizations, schools and foundations in Northeast Ohio in the areas of
outcome measurement, grants administration and strategic planning. She is considered a leader in the field of outcomes
measurement for non-profit health and human service agencies. She has
conducted training workshops and seminars at the local and regional
levels across the country and has been a presenter at
local, regional and national conferences.

Susan Van Vorst Receives Chamberlain Scholarship
The Chapter is pleased to announce that Susan Van
Vorst is the recipient of the 2010 AFP NCOH Chamberlain Scholarship.
Susan is Vice President, Fund Development at Stan Hywet Hall and
Gardens. She will attend the AFP International Conference in Baltimore,
MD on April 11-14, 2010. The cost of the conference is covered by the
AFP Foundation for Philanthropy, and our local chapter provides a
scholarship of up to $1,000 for expenses. Congratulations, Susan!

In honor of National Philanthropy Day, AFP is offering
a $50.00 discount to new members joining in the Active category by
November 30, 2009.
AFP’s Active Category is open to persons who have at
least one year of experience at the time of application as fundraising
professionals, are self‐employed or associated with an organization,
institution or firm and compensated for his/her services. Active members
hold some degree of accountability for income generation within the
philanthropic process; estimate at least a quarter of their time is
spent on fundraising‐related responsibilities; subscribe to the Code of
Ethical Principles and Standards ("Code") and its bylaws; promote the
Donor Bill of Rights and, are employed or have been employed by an
institution or organization that provides benefits to society.
