Message from the President ~ Larry Becker - LarryB@hfhSummitCounty.org

Action, Action Everywhere! Get Involved!

Autumn Greetings from AFP NCOH!

The end of the year is among the busiest times for development professionals and so it is with your AFP Chapter.

Our August Career Success Institute (CSI) was indeed a success featuring the internationally recognized Linda Lysakowski, ACFRE. While attendance was down somewhat due to the state of the economy, the 80 or so people in attendance gave rave reviews to the program. The chapter provided something new as well: an internet link so that all the attendees and sponsors could obtain ALL of the handouts so that everyone had the benefit of all of the sessions.

Many thanks to our sponsors and to event co-chairs Mella Castner and Kathy Romito for a job well done.

Our next two professional development opportunities promise to be excellent learning opportunities. We will revisit the extraordinarily successful program we did last year in conjunction with the Cleveland AFP Chapter -- Paul Clark, Regional President, Northern Ohio Region of National City, now part of PNC, will be our presenter in October and our December program will pose the theory that story telling is the most effective way to deliver your Mission’s Message.

I am sure that you will find both programs both interesting and thought provoking.

National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is rapidly approaching and we have a marvelous group of awardees to recognize and thank for their willingness to invest themselves in the betterment of the community. I urge you and your organization to not only attend the event but consider a sponsorship at some level to get your message out to the area’s philanthropists and businesses.

Where else will you find hundreds of donors and colleagues who can serve as resources for you in one place at one time?

And that’s my final message: get involved and stay involved with your AFP Chapter.

In these turbulent economic times this very dynamic group of people can be your best friends. Your network may help you address professional challenges and if the unthinkable happens – and it has to many development professionals in the last year – and your job is eliminated, it is perhaps your best source of new opportunities.

P.S. If you haven’t been to the NEW AFP International website, check it out! http://www.afpnet.org. It’s a wonderful resource for current information; it’s cleaner and also easier to navigate.

Tips for Development Officers ~ Ashley Kellicker - ashley@jaofnco.org

Survival Kit for Fundraisers

A tumultuous economy can present unique challenges for nonprofit fundraising. Looking for ways to cope? AFP has compiled a toolkit of resources to advise and guide member fundraisers in tough economic times.

"Donors have a lot on their minds these days as they sit down with their personal budgets," explains Paulette Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP. "But despite the headlines about Wall Street and the financial markets, we as fundraisers should not lose sight of the fact that giving is a way for communities to pull together. While the economic forecasts are uncertain right now, what is quite certain is the capacity of people to lend a hand and support institutions of all kinds. We hope you’ll use AFP as a resource in garnering vital support for your organization in what may be a wild ride over the next few months."

A Survival Kit for Fundraising in a Bad Economy is a Members-Only benefit containing over 50 resources! To access the Kit, please click here and login with your Username and Password. To see a sample of resources included in the Survival Kit click here.
