News from AFP International

One of the most important roles and responsibilities
of an AFP chapter president is to be a conduit from the international
organization to our members.
Over the last couple of months, Laura Hnat and I
attended meetings at the International Conference in New Orleans and I
participated in a Chapter Presidents’ conference call. Briefly, here are
the highlights of what I learned:
- Overall, AFP membership numbers are down slightly
but not significantly, according to Paulette Maehara, AFP
International President; happily, our local chapter membership is
holding VERY STEADY at slightly over 130 members.
- AFP International (IHQ) has felt the impact of
the turbulent economy, particularly as job board and advertising
revenues tumbled in late 2008. While expenses have been trimmed by
about 10%, I was heartened to learn that there have been NO
REDUCTIONS in any services to members.
- Robbe Healey, AFP International’s Board Chair,
reported that there are now 205 chapters, of which 36% (74) are
rated as 10 Star Chapters, of which YOUR CHAPTER IS ONE!
- AFP IHQ and the Board continue to study the
concept of a nonprofit organizational membership, since about 80%
of memberships are paid for by the fundraiser’s employer. It’s
encouraging and an acknowledgement of who the customer really is.
That work should be completed sometime in 2010.
- A special highlight was the meeting of similar
sized chapters. It was both energizing and engaging: other chapters
offered a lot of creative ideas to benefit members and it was
encouraging to note how well AFP NCOH is doing in providing service
to our local members.
If you would like to ...
- learn more about the details of the meetings held
at the international conference or
- are interested in becoming more involved in
chapter leadership or on a committee
... please either call me (330) 760-2427 or send an
email.

Welcome New Board Members
On behalf of the Nominating Committee, please welcome
the AFP North Central Ohio Chapter’s two recent additions to the Board
of Directors:
Abbe Turner, Director of
Development for NEOUCOM – Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of
Medicine & Pharmacy
Abbe Turner is honored to serve the fundraising
profession in her new role as AFP NCOH Board Member. Abbe believes in
incrementalism and the power of small consistent actions and gifts that
lead towards a chosen goal. Her prior fundraising success at Cuyahoga
Valley National Park Association and WKSU Public Radio 89.7 FM have
benefitted communities and improved the environmental and cultural
landscapes in northeast Ohio since 1999. Abbe received her Masters
degree in Arts Policy & Administration from the Ohio State University,
and together with her husband Anderson raises three children at their
Hiram Township family farm. Abbe currently serves the Chapter on the
Professional Development Committee.
Susan Griffin, Director of
Operations at the Center for Nonprofit Excellence
Susan has extensive experience in the nonprofit
sector and was instrumental in the start-up of five programs in the
fields of health care and aging. She joined the Center for Nonprofit
Excellence in 2002 and in 2008 became the Director of Operations for CNE.
She is responsible for the human resource and financial operations of
CNE as well as providing consulting services, product development and
managing special projects. Susan has a B.A. in Urban Studies from the
University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, and a Masters in Public
Administration from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio. Susan
currently serves the Chapter on the National Philanthropy Day and
Communications Committees.
Congratulations to you both! We look forward to
working with you.
