2005 Outstanding Philanthropist Award:
The Haslinger Family

nominated by Joan Lauck, Director of Development, Akron Art Museum

About the Haslinger Family:

The Haslinger Family Foundation has had a significant impact on local philanthropy with their strong tradition of giving. As their foundation mission states, they are dedicated to making a positive difference in the world by providing philanthropic support to nonprofit organizations with special concerns, both today and in the future.

During his lifetime, Dennis Haslinger, who passed away in 1995, contributed greatly to the community. Today, his family is continuing his legacy of giving back to the community with Mrs. Sandra Haslinger at the helm of the family foundation. Sandra is a committed and dedicated person who deeply believes in helping others and making a difference in their lives. Managing the foundation is truly a family affair, with son Douglas, daughter-in-law Myriam, son Benjamin, and daughters Kimberly, Melissa, and Jennifer all playing active roles.

The Haslingers support many local charities, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Summit County, The Humane Society of Greater Akron, Akron Children's Hospital, and Old Trail School. The Haslingers are also ardent supporters of the Akron Art Museum. Myriam is a member of the Board of Trustees and has co-chaired the Museum’s annual Beaux Arts Ball fundraiser for two years. The family has also supported one of the Museum’s key educational outreach programs for the past two years and has made a major leadership contribution to the Akron Art Museum’s Create a Masterpiece Capital Campaign. The foundation helped the Museum to meet a demanding challenge grant issued by the GAR Foundation that required matching gifts of one million dollars or more.

In addition to these contributions, son Douglas and daughter-in-law Myriam further serve our community by volunteering countless hours on boards and committees, while daughters Melissa and Jennifer both share the same love of animals and contribute their time supporting animal issues. This potent combination of volunteerism, stewardship, leadership, and fiscal support speaks volumes about the important, community-focused values they share as a family.
